Convict Labor Working on a Railroad

Railroads were often constructed using the labor of incarcerated people. This photograph was taken circa 1890 by Asheville photographer Thomas H. Lindsey. Lindsey was one of the first photographers to capture the scenery of Western North Carolina in his collection "Views of Western North Carolina."
